One major part of fire code in most areas I’ve ever worked in is that the door access control system must be tied into the fire alarm so an alarm event will kill power to any doors with maglocks. Every door also needs its own exit button to again directly cut power if the automatic motion detector fails to let anyone out. Let’s hope those were the things missed.

I’m an electronic security installer. You know how many times I’ve done stuff like install a complete 40+ camera CCTV system at a new store under construction only to be back at the same store a year later ripping it all out when it goes out of business? I know what that feels like.

Worst is when you come around for a regular store equipment refresh and recognize something you installed at that store ten years ago and start feeling real old…

The vast majority of regular internet users never think of things from this perspective because they’ve never been in a position of running a public facing website. To most people, the Internet is just there to be taken for granted like the public street and park outside someone’s house. All the stuff on it just exists there by itself. That’s also why we have issues with free speech online, where people expect certain rights that don’t exist, because these aren’t publicly owned websites and people aren’t getting that.
