Yep, rubrics are crucial. I’ve graded some argumentative essays where students wrote about topics I absolutely disagreed with, but they did so in a compelling way that met the requirements on the assignment sheet and rubric, and therefore earned A’s. Clear expectations, in writing, applied equally, will cover your ass. But I’m sure Oklahoma would still complain about teaching the problems with arguments from incredulity.
